Many Pixel 4a 5G units are currently facing touchscreen problems that cropped up after the December 2020 security update. “We are aware of this issue and a fix will be included in an upcoming software update,” a Google community specialist wrote on the official complaint thread. In the meantime, Google suggests you try the following tips to improve your device’s responsiveness:
- When tapping icons on the edge of the screen, tap the center of the button or the side of the button/icon furthest away from the edge of the display.
- When tapping icons, including the navigation buttons on the bottom of your screen, use the tip of your finger or thumb instead. This will help improve touch recognition.

It didn’t roll out with the January security update so it could still be some time away. Until then, you’ll just have to live with the aforementioned workarounds even though they might not be the most intuitive ways of navigating your phone.
